April 20, 2006: A Connected World

I was looking through my friend's links and I stumbled on this. And that made me think a bit. In the world as we know it today, the connected world has literally taken over our lives. I work at ibm and can't get away from it all. Daily I'm surrounded by computers and e-mail, and often I spend a good bit of time catching up with my friends in Kingston.

I've sat and thought about it all, and I think I've made a few conclusions. I don't know how to respond to this invasion of my life, so to speak; but at the same time it's a great communication tool. MSN is a double-edged sword; letting me keep in touch with friends who are far away, but at the same time I can waste enormous amounts of time just chatting about nothing. And...I'd really rather be chatting face to face, where possible. I just think in the age of cellphones, laptops, blogs, ... it's so very easy to break down and trivialize friendships and relationships. In an age where you can just turn off MSN when you don't want to talk to someone, or where you can plan your next few sentences to impress someone. Yet, at the same time, you can cheaply communicate with your loved ones who are physically far away, you can express more of yourself and let your guard down more than when you're face to face; which is bad; but I don't know...

It all seems very suffocating. I'm on my laptop right now...which is a big evil...I'm seriously thinking of NOT buying a laptop for school next year. Ever since work gave me one, it's been fun, but at the same time, work follows me around everywhere, and I'm in a very suffocating, connected world. Dunno where I want to go with this, just that sometimes it's good to sit down and just turn off everything. Looks like I won't be able to do that until at least end of August.

Hey co-worker.

Your site has really encouraged me today. I was feeling down but thanks for being so bold in your profession of Faith on this site and at work.

I too will fight the temptation to buy a laptop at the end of this term. Let's hold each other accountable for that!

Chris
