I was walking by work the other day, and the nearby construction site caught my attention. I watched intently as the cranes went about their busy work, and then it hit me that the building was going up really fast. Only a few weeks ago I had seen the foundation laid, and the land was just a big dirt hole with a few pipes in it. Much quicker than the ilc we witnessed being built a few years ago; but that’s besides the point.
While I stood there, a verse came to mind:
And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.
I’ve been having a lot of conversations with people about how hard it is to build a fellowship, how hard it is to plan things when the leadership is physically apart, how hard it is for the Spirit to work if there’s so many other facades that are being built up. Yet, I forget the most important thing; and that is that God is the one building His church; not us. And thus, beyond what he has called us to do, we are responsible for nothing else. It doesn’t matter if we have a huge or miniscule budget; it doesn’t matter if our sanctuary seats 50 or 5,000,000. The crux of the matter is that in the end, God is building His church, and his written infalliable word states that the gates of Hades will not overcome it. I wonder when I’ll get a clue and start living this way; instead of complaining and criticizing at what the Church has done.
